Riders need not necessarily be experienced as we offer instruction to make the rider comfortable and confident. We offer our Warriors something different. They head off into the wilderness on horseback with well school horses and competent guides. The horse trail through lush indigenous vegetation, forest area and grass plains makes a truly remarkable experience. On these trails there is a variety of small game, various birds, including the endangered blue swallow, odd klip springer, mountain reedbuck, grey duiker and sightings of wild horses.

Mountain Biking

A big part of our exercise is done on our mountain bikes. Several off road out-rides will introduce the Warriors to this exciting and healthy lifestyle. The following topics will be covered:

  • History of the mountain bike
  • Riding techniques
  • How to equip yourself
  • Frame, group set and tyre selection
  • Basic maintenance of your mountain bike
  • All about “safe riding”
  • Cross country riding
  • Mountain biking - part of adventure racing.

Hiking

Various hiking trips are planned during the programme. As part of the hiking experience students will receive guidance on the following:

  • Correct set up of hiking equipment
  • Correct packing of backpack
  • Outdoor food preparation
  • Route planning and Navigation
  • Outdoor emergencies and first aid
  • Hiking hints
  • Trail ethics

Trails are chosen carefully to maximise the experience and diversity of our country and gradually increase in difficulty levels as student proficiency increases. Some of the areas where the Warriors will be hiking include the following:

  • Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve (One of the largest canyons in the world):
This 30 000 hectares contains well-known attractions such as the pinnacle rock formation, God’s Window, Burke’s Luck Potholes, The three Rondavels and the Belvedere hydro-electric power station(Built in 1911 to supply power to gold crushers). The overnight hut is situated upstream of a magnificent rock pool where they spend the afternoon swimming and relaxing. The hike meanders through weathered quartzite rocks and across grassland to the watervalspruit valley. Then from paradise pool the trail rises gently and descends into the deep cut gorge where the blyde and treur river have eroded spectacular cylindrical potholes into the rocks.

  • Lesodi Trail:
The Lesodi Trail between Heanertsburg and Magoebaskloof is steep climb with a drop in grasslands and indigenous forest. Bird and small animals are abundant on this trail and includes the rare Cape Parrot and Samango monkeys. A few points of interest are:
    • The nineteenth century sawpit where woodcutters dug a pit beneath large felled trees so that they could saw them into plank with one person above and one below.
    • The Cathedral tree, this is a strangler vine which strangled several trees and now remind one of a Cathedral vault
    • The nose, the Pipe and the Knoll are other attractions on this trail

  • Louis Changuion Trail:
Louis Changuion trail is an easy fun hike in starting and ending in the Haenersburg Village. This beautiful hike meanders through indigenous forest and grassland area.

  • Serala Wolkberg Wilderness area:
The Serala Wilderness area has no set trails in the area and the hiker therefore has to plan his own route with the help of a map. Because there is no set route, there is no limit to the number of days that can be spent in the area. The Serala mountains are part of the Northern Drakenberg mountains, where thick layer of quartzite rest on dolomite and granite-gneiss. Prominent Serala Peak (2050m) is South East inside the wilderness area on the edge of the lowveld. The well-known “Face of President Paul Kruger” is found due south of Serala Peak. The Forehead and nose are easily recognisable as is the beard, where the Wonderwoud trees are visible in the low neck of the Mountain.

  • Magoebaskloof trails:
Various trails in the Magoebaskloof Mountains are covered. The Magoebaskloof Mountains where two Warrior Chiefs dueled takes it’s name from the Tlou tribes chief Makgoba, who lived in this area. Surely this must be one of the most beautiful trails in South Africa, and possibly the world nestled in the indigenous forests of Magoebaskloof. These trails take you to beautiful areas steeped in Mystery.
