Public Speaking and Communication Skills

The content of the course will be as follows:

  • Bridging the Gap
  • Establishing the students’ level of familiarity with the subject of Public Speaking.
  • Introduction to Public Speaking (based on principles of the ATKV and Toast Masters International)
  • Exploring two major components:
    • Prepared Speech and
    • Impromptu speech
  • Discussion of judging criteria as guidelines
  • Adjudication of speeches and report back
  • Choice of an appropriate topic
  • Brainstorming ideas
  • Research
  • Identify arguments, Own point of view and Personal experiences
  • Layout and structure of one’s speech
  • Writing a first draft
  • Editing draft and writing of second draft
  • Writing / typing of final product (Putting your money where your mouth is)
  • Revising major aspects
  • Micro speech writing
  • Going solo
  • Performance - adjudicated by co-participants
  • Awarding certificates of recognition for completing the workshop in Public Speaking

Music, lights and Stage Work

An introductory workshop will give the student background on music, lights and equipment that they will apply as part of their own show. An awareness of the importance of Lighting, sound and special effects that can change an ordinary event into an extraordinary one is part this workshops

Creative Arts

Students are introduced and challenged to explore their creativity through a wide variety of activities

Basic Dance Skills

Professional exhibition dancers are contracted to teach different dance styles. The workshop is designed to develop self confidence and the ability to socially interact in the dancing environment. Modern everyday dancing which is practical, and the participants can identify with, is used to encourage participation in a fun way.

The workshop includes some of the following dance styles:

  • Ballroom
  • Two-step
  • Waltz
  • Hip-Hop
  • Contemporary
  • Modern
  • Gum Boot dance
  • Bio-body movements
  • Swing

Basic Mechanical Skills

An introduction workshop to students, presented by a specialist in the motor industry will cover the following:

  • The Internal Combustion Engine
  • Ignition System
  • Fuel Injection System
  • Cooling System
  • Lubrication System
  • Clutch
  • Transmission
  • Differential
  • Brake System
  • Chassis, suspension and wheel alignment
  • Service intervals
  • Dyne Tuning
  • Fuel Consumption
  • Fault Finding

Basic DIY Skills

Electrical Skills:
Students will be introduced to basic electrical skills, which will vary from simple house wiring, plugs, appliances electricity, consumption, meter readings etc.

DIY:
Students are subjected to general DIY projects

Domestic Skills

Food Preparation:
Students will be divided into smaller groups and will be made responsible for meals on a rotation basis. Guidance will be given to ensure that students receive the maximum learning experience through participation. Students will have the opportunity to learn basic recipes and the finer details of catering concerning menu planning, food hygiene and etiquette.

Outdoor Food preparation:
Students will be guided and assisted in various aspects of outdoor food preparation. “Pot brood”, “potjiekos”, barbeques, stews, outdoor breakfasts as well as what to pack on a outdoor trips are typical examples thereof.

Gardening (Organic vegetable garden):
Students will be expected to manage an organic vegetable garden. Assistance will be given by a local organic farmers and herb experts. Medicinal and culinary qualities of certain herbs / plants will also be discussed. Harvest will be used in the kitchen and excess will be donated to the local orphanage.

Needlework:
Students will learn a few basic needlework skills that could help them on a rainy day. By the end of the workshop they will be able sew a seam, sew on buttons and cover other basic needlework skills.

Mixology (Preparation / Usage of alcoholic beverages)
Basic Bar Etiquette:

  • Introduction, Health & Hygiene, Guest relations
  • Know your bar: Ice, Glassware, utensils
  • Product Knowledge:
    • Fermented products
    • Beer
    • Cider, alcoholic fruit beverages, coolers
    • Wine, champagne, sparkling wine
    • Fortified wine.
  • Miscellaneous
    • Aperitifs
    • Digestives
    • Biters
    • Distilled products (Whiskey, Brandy, Rum, Vodka, Gin, Tequila)
    • Liqueurs
  • Cocktails
    • Mixology, elements of a mixed drink, component of cocktails, pre mixes, pouring order cocktail explosion.
